Bucklands Game Release News

By Iain Stewart

This year we have added to the Bucklands Family by bringing Impala and Blesbok onto the property. Earlier this year we brought on some of the species that historically occurred in the area, and added to our current population of, Red Hartebeest and Zebra.

We will be adding Bushbuck, Eland and Springbok to our current population this winter, as well as, Gemsbok and Waterbuck. Our most recent addition to Bucklands, and to date the most exciting, has been our Giraffe which can be seen towering over the Spekboom. We are expecting Gemsbuck, Waterbuck and additional Eland, Springbuck and Impala to be delivered over the next few months. All very exciting and we'll keep you all updated through Bucklands News.

Did You Know?

Kudu's are great kickers and are capable of breaking a wild dog or jackal's neck or back. They are good jumpers too and can clear a 5-foot fence from a standing start!

Rare Sightings

By Iain Stewart

It is that time of the year when the Impala start to rut and compete for breeding rights.

The other antelope should be joining in the rut soon.

One of the most exciting sightings was a flock of about 30 Red Billed Oxpeckers.

These birds were re-released into the area after dips that the farmers used on their livestock to control the tick population greatly damaged the original Oxpecker population. We were ecstatic when we saw a herd of our Eland covered with Oxpeckers.

With Bucklands bordering the Great Fish River Reserve, there was always a chance that their larger animals could break though the game fence.

For the first time since the game fence has been in use, a Black Rhino cow and a few Cape Buffalo have broken through the fence and have been visiting us here on Bucklands.

The Black Rhino was sighted in April near one of the water holes and the Buffalo were sighted near Graskop, with a young calf which we suspect was born on Bucklands.

Interesting Reading

A Literary Guide to the Eastern Cape

by Jeanette Eve (Author)

This book includes poems and prose extracts from imaginative and personal writings and introduces some 80 writers from different eras and backgrounds.

Material is arranged regionally, allowing one to travel by car or in the mind across the varied terrain of the Eastern Cape, learning about cities, towns, coast and countryside, and discovering the light and dark sides of places through writers' eyes … maps are included too.

Jeanette Eve and her husband live in Grahamstown.

Meet Gerrie …

By Iain Stewart

On Bucklands we are fortunate enough to have a large Leopard Tortoise population.

Most recently a huge specimen, now nicknamed Gerrie, was seen on Graskop (site of historical interest on Bucklands).

Gerrie is the largest Leopard Tortoise that I have ever seen with an adult barely able to straddle his shell!

Mary-Ann with Gerrie - an amazing sighting!
