Bucklands News …

By Terry & Michele Stewart

Welcome to our fourth newsletter!

The Bucklands Family is growing, with the birth of our grandson, Dominic Alistair Stewart, born on the 20th January 2010 at 08h45, to proud parents Iain & Mary-Ann.

From the animal side our White Rhino have arrived and look beautiful. The Reserve has had some rain recently so the farm is looking really green and healthy. With a lot of young animals running a round.

The renovation of the old farm house at Bucklands into Bucklands Boutique Guest House is now complete and the Boutique Guest House opened in April 2010.

Bucklands Game Release News

By Iain Stewart

2010 has been an exciting year on Bucklands as we added to the animal population here on Bucklands with Fiona a 3yr old Rhino, she seems to have settled in well. The other animal populations which we've added to include the zebra, eland, waterbuck and impala. One of the most exciting things here on Bucklands is that Campbell, the Rhino bull, has mated with both Maud and Isabelle, the two Rhino cows. So towards the end of next year we hope to have two new arrivals on Bucklands. As for the rest of the animals calving season is around the corner, so heres hoping for a good one.

It’s great to see that so many of you have taken advantage of our World Cup and Spring Specials. We really appreciate the support and going by the comments everyone has had a great experience. Remember our Spring Special still runs until the end of November, so there is still time to book!

Although the Eastern Cape has been plagued by drought Bucklands has received a similar amount of rain to our annual average, so although always dry at this time of year our animals are looking great and we look forward to an excellent birthing season in November and December.

The newly opened Guest House is proving very popular with a number of great wildlife sightings at the waterhole in front of the verandah and swimming pool.

Steenbok are the only antelope that bury their droppings!

Download our Bucklands Spring Specials valid to the 30th November 2010 and book your Bucklands Holiday Safari!

Rare Sightings

by Iain Stewart

In the last while some really interesting animals have been seen and at strange times. And some for the first time ever on Bucklands.

Let us start with the strange sightings, a number of aardwolf as well as aardvark are being seen during the day which is rather unusual yet great for photographs. Mary-Ann was lucky enough to grab a fleeting glance of a beautiful caracal. A large number of hippo are being seen along the river.

Saving the best for last, both of these exciting in their own right are the sightings of brown hyena and blue duiker.

Newman's Birds of Southern Africa
by Kenneth Newman

This Commemorative edition of Newman's Birds of Southern Africa at once updates a classic and pays tribute to one of the region's best loved birding authors, the late Kenneth Newman. With the support of bird expert Faansie Peacock, the author's daughter, Vanessa Newman, has thoroughly revised, updated and expanded this new edition to reflect the latest research, both in terms of text and illustrations. Covering all the birds recorded from the Antarctic to the Zambezi River, its range includes the birds from the southern seas as well as those of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho and Mozambique.
