Bucklands News …

By Terry & Michele Stewart

Welcome to our third newsletter!

The Bucklands Family is growing, with the birth of our grandson, Dominic Alistair Stewart, born on the 20th January 2010 at 08h45, to proud parents Iain & Mary-Ann.

From the animal side our White Rhino have arrived and look beautiful. The Reserve has had some rain recently so the farm is looking really green and healthy. With a lot of young animals running a round.

The renovation of the old farm house at Bucklands into Bucklands Boutique Guest House is now complete and the Boutique Guest House opened in April 2010.

Bucklands Game Release News

By Iain Stewart

At the end of the 2009 game season a healthy group of 30 Eland were released at Bucklands Private Game Reserve, as well as an additional 100 Impala. The animals seem to all be doing well, and with the rain that we had in late 2009 there is plenty of food for them. The Giraffe have settled down and the sightings, when near a road, are really amazing. We kicked off the 2010 season with a bang, with the introduction of White Rhino at Bucklands, a really exciting time and these majestic animals are thriving at Bucklands

Did You Know?

This golden buff and white owl, commonly known as the Barn Owl, could be con-fused with an African Grass-Owl, but is much paler & has less contrast between the upperparts & the underparts. The heart-shaped, white facial disc highlights the small, black eyes.

Rare Sightings

by Iain Stewart

There have been a number of rare sightings lately. Ranging from the Spotted Eagle Owl to the Cape Buffalo. The Buffalo have been seen more recently around the Luxury Tented Camp. The Birding on Bucklands is fantastic at the moment with a number of Raptors being seen, as well as a number of Cuckoos around. Bat eared fox's have been spotted more and more frequently, which is great. The most exciting sighting is the first Honey Badger sighting. Honey badgers are very secretive creatures and very seldom are seen in the open.

A literary guide to the Eastern Cape: Places and the voices of writers,

by Jeanette Eve

The Eastern Cape is a country of great natural beauty and tourist potential, and has produced a wealth of writers and writings that have responded to the landscape in a variety of interesting and enjoyable ways. One thinks here of Athol Fugard and Port Elizabeth, Olive Schreiner and Cradock, Thomas Pringle and the Baviaans River valley, and the praise poets of the Transkei. Drawing on material from both imaginative and personal writing, this guide presents more than 80 writers and close to 100 sites - from the 18th century to the present - arranged by region, so that one can travel, by car or in the mind, across the Eastern Cape and discover its beauties through the eyes of local writers and poets.
